Legionella prevention and water safety in schools

Schools, daycare centers, and other educational institutions have a special responsibility: to provide a safe learning and working environment. This includes ensuring clean and safe drinking water. Legionella prevention plays a key role in this.

Because buildings are often (partially) empty during weekends and holidays, the risk of legionella growth in the water pipes of schools is considerably greater than in other sectors.

Legislation and regulations for hotels

Schools are subject to the duty of care under the Drinking Water Decree . This means that schools are not, in principle, priority installations , but are obligated to properly manage and maintain their drinking water installations. Specifically, this means:

  • Management and maintenance of the installation, including checking of backflow preventers.
  • Weekly flushing of unused taps, such as taps or showers that have been idle for extended periods.
  • Special attention is required during holiday periods , when buildings are often completely closed. During these periods, a good flushing and management plan is essential to prevent Legionella risks.

By implementing these measures, schools comply with their legal duty of care and the risk of Legionella contamination is significantly reduced.
