Which legionella filters work when? Complete selection guide for healthcare, hotels, schools, and businesses

Legionella filters are being used in more and more buildings, both preventively and in situations where an installation temporarily fails to meet legal standards. The choice of the right filter type is important: not every filter is suitable for every situation, and incorrect use can lead to continued contamination risks or ineffective control measures. To assist building managers, installers, and healthcare facilities, we have provided a practical selection guide below, showing which filter type works in which situation, based entirely on Dutch legislation and market practices.

Purposes

Legionella filters are broadly used for two purposes. Firstly, they serve to immediately secure an atomizing tap point after an exceedance above 100 CFU/L. Secondly, they can be used in vulnerable environments, such as healthcare and long-term care facilities, where residents and patients require extra protection. In both cases, it is essential to understand how a filter works, what its realistic lifespan is, and when a particular model is suitable or not.

In healthcare, shower filters are almost always used when residents or patients have an increased health risk. The most chosen models are T-Safe Medical, cBlue SC3 and Magna Pro Medical, because they contain a reliable microbiological barrier filter that guarantees water quality without affecting user comfort. These filters are primarily used in hospitals, care hotels, and long-term residential care facilities where safety and continuity are paramount.

Hotels and recreational parks, on the other hand, more often use robust filter solutions such as Magna Pro Chrome and AS Shower Comfort. These filters are designed for high usage and offer a balance between comfort, flow, and safety. In this sector, usage intensity plays a significant role: if dozens of guests use the same shower daily, the filter must be able to handle a high hydraulic capacity and remain stable throughout its maximum three-month usage period.

For schools, sports complexes, and office buildings, Legionella filters are primarily a temporary solution. They are applied during maintenance work, stagnation problems, or a temporary exceedance of the standard. In these situations, it is important that filters are easy to install and provide immediate effect. Point-of-use filters such as T-Safe and AquaFree models are therefore most commonly used here: quick to install, immediately safe, and easy to monitor.

There are also situations where an inline filter, sometimes referred to as a point-of-entry filter, can be considered. This applies primarily to installations that temporarily cannot guarantee safe water quality but where there is no prolonged contamination. Inline filters are not a structural solution for persistent Legionella problems and must be applied with care. The lifespan of this type of filter is also a maximum of three months and strongly dependent on water quality and sediment load. Therefore, we only recommend inline filters in combination with a clear recovery plan and temporary monitoring.

Choosing the right Legionella filter therefore always depends on the nature of the installation, the use of the tap point, and the health of the end-user. By assessing the risks, usage intensity, and location beforehand, a suitable solution is always found that complies with laws and regulations and guarantees the continuity of the installation.
